This 3 hour seminar focuses on best practices in the rental market to welcome people with disabilities and avoid mistakes that can lead to a fair housing complaint. The class opens with resources for managers to use in continuing the education of their staff on a monthly basis – one of the best practices stressed by HUD as a way to ensure staff remains compliant under the Act. Attendees will review some history of disability discrimination and a new Ohio initiative called “Breaking Silences” which reviews best practices on management of communication with people with disabilities in a variety of ways and with new technologies.
- New protected classes like source of income and how that intersects with disability
- Who must comply with the newly re-authorized Violence Against Women Act and how it intersects with the protected class of disability;
- Update on fair housing laws;
- How HUD is monitoring compliance of housing providers in their treatment of people with a criminal history linked to their disabilities and domestic violence;
- Current litigation trends based on protected classes;
- Assistance Animal regulation updates and best practices;
- Harassment and the protected class of disability.

John Zimmerman is the Vice President of the Miami Valley Fair Housing Center in Dayton, Ohio. He manages Education and Outreach for the organization which provides continuing education credits for Housing Providers, Realtors, Architects, and Social Workers. He conducts fair housing workshops for consumers, municipal staff, planning departments, social service & charitable organizations whose work intersects with housing. He has a bachelor’s degree from Capital University in Columbus, Ohio. He resides both in Indiana and Ohio. |
