Fair Housing from the 19th Century to Today's Challenges

Join us for an enlightening seminar that combines a historical journey into fair housing with an in-depth look at current challenges and best practices in compliance.

What to Expect:

  • Fair Housing Basics and Legislative Origins:
Begin with a comprehensive review of fair housing principles, tracing their roots back to 1866. Gain insight into the history that shaped today’s fair housing laws and protections.

  • Civil Rights Photographic Exhibit Tour:
Explore a compelling exhibit presented by the Miami Valley Fair Housing Center, featuring rare color photographs by Bernard Kleina. These 1965-66 images capture Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and demonstrators advocating for "Open Housing," the precursor to the Fair Housing Act signed into law on April 11, 1968, just one week after Dr. King’s assassination.

  • Deep Dive into Current Fair Housing Topics:
The second half of the seminar addresses key areas of fair housing litigation and regulatory updates, including:

    • HUD’s 2024 guidance on fair housing advertising and the impact of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in marketing.
    • HUD’s 2024 guidance on rental applicant screening and AI-driven platforms.
    • Nationwide trends in source-of-income legislation and their implications.
    • Best practices to avoid liability under disability rights provisions, understanding why 60% of fair housing cases stem from disability-related complaints.

This seminar is ideal for property managers, landlords, and anyone committed to understanding and applying fair housing principles effectively.
